LCDR Berton E. Bresch, USN
July 6, 1924 – July 31, 2002

LCDR Berton Edward Bresch, (Ret.), was born on September 6, 1924 in Sioux City, Iowa. He enlisted in the Navy on January 21, 1943 and received radio schooling at the University of Chicago.

His Cryptologic service began when assigned to Bainbridge Island, Washington in August 1943 until 1945 when assigned to the Naval Communication Annex, Washington, D.C. He was transferred to Naval Communication Supplementary Activity, Adak, Alaska for one year.  Berton transferred to U.S. Naval Security Group Activity (NSGA) Dupont, South Carolina, until 1948. He was assigned to Commander SIXTH Fleet until 1949, followed by orders to U.S. Naval Security Group Detachment San Juan, Puerto Rico and promotion to CTC. Berton transferred in 1951 to U.S. Naval Security Group Department Skaggs Island, California. The year of 1953 saw duty in NSGA Kami Seya, Japan, with orders in 1955 to 1956 to Net Control Station (NCS) Wahiawa, Oahu, Hawaii. He was assigned as a CTCS to the U.S. Air Force Security Service as Chief Instructor at March Air Force Base, California.

He was promoted to Warrant Officer during his 1959-1960 tour at Navy Communication Training Center Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, followed by commissioning to Ensign in 1960, after which he returned to NSGA Adak and promoted to Lieutenant (JG). During 1962-1964 while at NCS Cheltenham, Maryland, he was promoted to Lieutenant, followed by orders to NCS Guam. In 1966 he returned to Goodfellow AFB, Texas as Officer-in-Charge of the Navy Detachment and promoted to Lieutenant Commander. In 1968 Berton transferred to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, serving as an exchange officer until 1971.

Berton retired on March 1, 1973 while Executive Officer at NSGA Skaggs Island, California. Following retirement, he served as counselor for several high schools, community colleges, the State of Nevada, and the Bureau of Land Management. He retired in 1990.

Berton died on July 31, 2002 in Carson City, Nevada and was buried at sea off Hawaii.
