Radio Direction Finding vs. Geolocation

Radio-based techniques play a crucial role in location determination and tracking applications, such as search and rescue operations, military reconnaissance, and wireless communication systems. Radio direction finding (RDF) and geolocation using Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) and Frequency Difference of Arrival (FDOA) are two prominent methods employed for this purpose.

Remembering the USS Indianapolis – 1,195 men sailed, 316 survived

On July 30, 1945, a Japanese submarine struck Indy with two torpedoes, triggering the worst sea disaster in the history of the United States Navy—and a story of heroism and sacrifice that still captivates millions. ​Legacy’s mission is to keep Indy’s history alive and to share it with future generations. Our programs include projects that directly serve Indy families, and we also offer education and outreach programs for schools, libraries, veterans’ groups, service organizations, museums, and media. The Harris Treaty

On July 29, 1858, the United States and Japan signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce (the Harris Treaty). Townsend Harris, the first U.S. diplomatic representative to Japan, negotiated the arrangement, which became effective July 4, 1859. A New York merchant with experience in Asia, Townsend was appointed consul general to Japan in August 1856 and began his assignment shortly thereafter. Harris was not welcomed and was ignored by the Japanese authorities for more than a year. He operated in diplomatic isolation out of the Gyokusenji Buddhist temple in Shimoda.

The US Navy Code and Signal Section Established July 28, 1916

Historically, the Naval Security Group began in 1916 when the Code and Signal Section was established in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.  Copied after British codes used during World War One, U.S. Navy developed their first modern code in 1918.

Flag Officer Announcement

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III announced today that the President has made the following nomination:

Navy Adm. Lisa M. Franchetti for appointment to the grade of admiral, with assignment as chief of naval operations, Washington, D.C. Franchetti is currently serving as vice chief of naval operations, Washington, D.C.

NIOC Pacific!

Did NIOC Hawaii just change the command name to NIOC Pacific?

Earlier this year, the Naval Information Operations Command (NIOC) Hawaii/CTF 1070, underwent a significant expansion of its administrative control (ADCON). This expansion welcomed three new commands into its fold, namely NIOC Whidbey Island/CTG 102, NIOC Colorado/CTG 101, and FES San Diego, adding to its already substantial size. Before this development, NIOC Hawaii’s responsibilities encompassed overseeing NIOD Korea, NIOD Alice Springs, and departments in Yokosuka, Japan, and Cambria, Australia. With this strategic shift in ADCON, NIOC Hawaii has solidified its position as a commanding presence throughout the entire Pacific region.

Although the command name will officially change later this year, many at the command are using NIOC Pacific in their official email signature line.
