This date is remembered each Memorial day for this CT. The picture does not depict the actual incident. The EC-121 disintegrated in air. Little of the remains were found. There was no reprisal to the KorComs. Flights were grounded for a time. A similar incident occurred in 2004 with the ChiComs.

Every man and woman who honorably wears or has worn the uniform of our Armed Forces is remembered in my wife’s and my nightly prayer every night before we turn in. There are signs that the public support and public trust for the members of our Armed Forces are vastly better today than they were 50 years ago. CT “O” Brancher from USNSGA Kamiseya was on “Peter Rabbit” that day. It was to be his last flight before leaving Kami to head back to the States to be discharged. Very sad. I was working communications with the aircraft at Kami after its flight from Atsugi, but we never actually made contact that day — an outcome that was not unusual with the KW-7 as well as the radio wave propagation that we often experienced with planes and ships in the Sea of Japan from our base on the east coast of Honshu near Yokohama. We learned of “Korcom” chatter that afternoon day watch from CTs in other parts of the tunnel relating to a shoot down. We tried to raise PR-21, but to no avail and it became apparent for the second time in fifteen months that North Korea had taken an aggressive military action against U.S. forces and would, again, do so with relative impunity. It is no wonder that the closed society of North Korea, over the decades, thought that the U.S. was a “paper tiger.” Rest in peace crew of PR-21 and especially CTO2 Steve Tesmer.

This picture of the EC-121 shoot down has what appears to be MiG-15s or maybe 17s shooting down the US aircraft.
I flew with VQ-1 from March 1972 to June 1978 and clearly remember being told that the plane had been destroyed in the air by an Atoll air-to-air fired from a MiG-21.
The missile blew one of the wings off and the plane went into a spin which tore it apart according to folks that had been in the squadron at that time.
What is the truth?
