It has been over three decades since the tragic events unfolded on the USS Stark (FFG-37), but the memory of the brave sailors who lost their lives that day remains etched in the hearts and minds of those who serve in the United States Navy. On May 17, 1987, an Iraqi F-1 Mirage fired two Exocet missiles at the USS Stark, resulting in the loss of 37 sailors and the injury of 21 others. This devastating attack serves as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by those who defend our nation at sea.

Recently, CTT1 Brandon Raymer, an instructor at the Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Corry Station, took it upon himself to honor the memory of the fallen crew members of the USS Stark. As an instructor of Shipboard Operations at the CTT Schoolhouse, Raymer decided to create a framed poster on the first deck of Building 1099, where the CTT schoolhouse is located. This thoughtful tribute stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifice made by the Electronic Warfare Technicians, now known as Cryptologic Technicians, who serve their country.

The framed poster is not only a memorial to the sailors who lost their lives, but it also serves as a symbol of gratitude and respect for their dedication and courage. It stands as a constant reminder to the current and future generation of sailors who pass through the CTT Schoolhouse of the sacrifice made by their predecessors. The poster acts as a visual representation of the unwavering commitment of the men and women who serve in the U.S. Navy, reminding all who see it of the risks and sacrifices inherent in their chosen profession.

The attack on the USS Stark was a stark reminder of the ever-present dangers faced by naval forces around the world. The sailors aboard the ship were engaged in their duties, protecting our nation’s interests and promoting stability in the region. Their lives were tragically cut short in an act of aggression, leaving a lasting impact on their families, friends, and fellow servicemembers.

Through this tribute, CTT1 Brandon Raymer has ensured that the memory of those lost aboard the USS Stark will continue to be honored and remembered. It serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit and bravery of the men and women who wear the uniform and stand ready to defend our freedoms.

As time passes and new generations of sailors join the ranks of the U.S. Navy, it is crucial to preserve the memory of those who came before them. The framed poster in the CTT Schoolhouse at IWTC Corry Station serves as a reminder that the duty and sacrifice of the crew of the USS Stark will never be forgotten.

In honoring the fallen, we honor all those who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. Navy. Their unwavering dedication and selflessness inspire us to strive for excellence in our own service to the nation. May the crew of the USS Stark always be remembered, and may their sacrifice serve as a constant reminder of the price paid for our freedom.
