The history of the Cryptologic Technician community is filled with stories of dedication, sacrifice, and service in defense of the nation. Among those stories is that of Cryptologic Technician Interpretive Second Class (CTI2) Chad M. Kueser, whose courage and resilience embody the finest traditions of military service.

Before joining the Navy, Chad served three years in the United States Army as an Infantryman. Like many Americans inspired to serve after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, he chose to continue his military career by enlisting in the U.S. Navy and entering the Cryptologic Technician Interpretive rating. His decision placed him at the forefront of the nation’s intelligence and cryptologic mission during a time of war.

On September 11, 2005, exactly four years after the attacks that inspired his enlistment, CTI2 Kueser was serving in Iraq as a member of a Cryptologic Support Team attached to the 42nd Infantry Division in Tikrit. Cryptologic Support Teams were routinely deployed alongside Army combat units, providing critical intelligence support to commanders operating in some of the most dangerous areas of Iraq and Afghanistan.

While deployed in support of combat operations, Kueser was severely wounded during a mortar attack. The attack resulted in the loss of both of his legs above the knee as well as other serious injuries. Despite these devastating wounds, his story did not end on the battlefield. Instead, it became one of determination, perseverance, and triumph over adversity.

Following extensive rehabilitation and recovery, Kueser continued to serve the national security mission. Drawing upon his operational experience and intelligence expertise, he transitioned to a career as an analyst with the Department of Defense, continuing his commitment to protecting the nation he had sacrificed so much to defend.

Outside of work, Chad enjoys spending time with his wife and their two children. An avid cook and outdoorsman, he has remained active despite the challenges associated with his injuries. He particularly enjoys hunting alongside fellow wounded veterans and has become an example of resilience within the veteran community.

In 2024, Chad reached another milestone when Homes For Our Troops completed a specially adapted custom home for him in Spring Branch, Texas. Designed to accommodate his mobility needs, the home includes accessible features such as pull-down shelving, roll-under countertops, and an adapted cooking area that allows him to continue pursuing his passion for cooking. The home also provides the independence and freedom that many severely wounded veterans seek after years of overcoming physical challenges.

The story of CTI2 Chad Kueser serves as a reminder that the Global War on Terror was fought not only by those carrying rifles on the front lines but also by intelligence professionals who deployed alongside combat forces to provide critical information that saved lives and enabled mission success. His service reflects the often-unseen contributions of Navy cryptologists operating in direct support of ground combat operations.

For the Cryptologic Technician community, Chad Kueser’s legacy is one of courage, sacrifice, and perseverance. His willingness to continue serving his country after suffering life-altering wounds stands as an inspiration to all who have worn the uniform.

CTI2 Chad M. Kueser your sacrifice and determination will not be forgotten.
