On Saturday, April 18, 2026, I walked the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery—a place where silence carries weight and every headstone tells a story. With more than 400,000 of our nation’s finest laid to rest there, the sheer magnitude of sacrifice settled heavily on my shoulders. At times, I found myself unable to speak, overcome by a quiet, reverent awe for those who gave so much in the name of freedom.

The AEGIS Weapon System (AWS) is a centralized, automated, command-and-control (C2) and weapons control system that was designed as a total weapon system, from detection to kill. The heart of the system is the AN/SPY, an advanced, automatic detect and track, multi-function phased-array radar. This high-powered radar is able to perform search, track and missile guidance functions simultaneously, with a track capacity of more than 100 targets. The first Engineering Development Model (EDM-1) of the SPY-1 was installed in the test ship USS NORTON SOUND (AVM 1) in 1973.

1. 25 years ago today (19 April 1989) I was underway in USS Iowa for fleet exercises in the Caribbean. It was a beautiful morning. Standing above and aft the bridge I readied myself for the firing of Turret Two’s 16 inch guns. A moment later, the beauty of the day was lost as the turret suffered a horrific explosion and fire that killed 47 of our shipmates. The takeaways of that day once again illustrate the absolute wonder of our Navy, specifically our Sailors, and the criticality of the job you do.
To boost morale following the defeat at Guadalcanal, Yamamoto decided to make an inspection tour throughout the South Pacific. It was during this tour that U.S. officials commenced an operation to kill him. On April 14, 1943, the United States naval intelligence effort, codenamed “Magic”, intercepted and decrypted a message containing specifics of Yamamoto’s tour, including arrival and departure times and locations, as well as the number and types of aircraft that would transport and accompany him on the journey. Yamamoto, the itinerary revealed, would be flying from Rabaul to Balalae Airfield, on an island near Bougainville in the Solomon Islands, on the morning of April 18, 1943.

CPL Traughber, USMC, was born on April 17 1946 in New Albany, Indiana to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Traughber. CPL Traughber was Special Communications Operator (MOS 2575) was killed in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds. At the time of the death he was assigned to Company E Support Battalion at Kamiseya Japan, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific.
