AG1 Edward T. Earhart
May 14, 1975 – September 11, 2001

Petty Officer First Class Edward Earhart was an aerographer’s mate in the U.S. Navy. Earhart served on ships across the globe, helping the vessels navigate around sea ice, before being stationed at the Pentagon. The Kentucky native loved his job and even kept a picture of an iceberg as his computer’s screen saver.

On 9/11, Edward was scheduled for a vacation but reported to work at the Pentagon anyway to help a colleague. After Earhart’s funeral, his coworkers signed this white U.S. Navy hat, also called a “Dixie cup,” and presented it to his family.

Earhart’s sister, Andrea Earhart Stauter, told the 9/11 Memorial Museum that “the hat was a tangible show of love and support for our family.”

The hat can now be seen on display in the Memorial Exhibition at the 9/11 Memorial Museum.
