Advanced intelligence helped the Allies turn the tables on Japan in this crucial World War II naval battle.

In May 1942, U.S. and Australian naval and air forces were facing off against the Imperial Japanese Navy in the Battle of the Coral Sea in the South Pacific. But in a windowless basement at Pearl Harbor, a group of U.S. Navy codebreakers had intercepted Japanese radio messages suggesting Japan was planning an entirely different—and potentially far more damaging—operation in the Pacific theater.

U.S. Marine Hornets to Sink WWII Corvette in South China Sea Drill at Balikatan 2025

F/A-18C/D Hornets from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323 will be participating in a South China Sea maritime strike drill against a Second World War-era Corvette during Balikatan 2025.

“The F/A-18s will be taking part in the Maritime Strike event where several Armed Forces Philippines, U.S., and Australian Defense Force platforms will integrate to simultaneously sense and shoot a decommissioned ship,” U.S. Navy spokesperson Lt. Carlos M. Gomez confirmed to USNI News.

Perhaps the most exclusive group of men in the Navy’s history-only 176 in number-they were a highly skilled, extremely dedicated and motivated group of professionals. What’s more, they helped their country secure victory in the Pacific during World War II.
