Jim O’Connor and I first met when I was getting ready to transfer from Kami Seya, Japan to NSGA Hanza in Okinawa. He called me at Kami to say that he and his wife Sandy were going to be our sponsors for our arrival and getting settled in at Hanza. My original impression was that Jim sounded like a really nice guy and I was looking forward to meeting him.

On the evening of August 26, 2021, a suicide bomber from ISIS-K detonated an explosive vest at the Abbey Gate, close to U.S. service members who were screening Afghan civilians awaiting evacuation. Following the initial blast, gunmen fired into the crowd, amplifying the devastation. In addition to the 13 American service members, at least 169 Afghan civilians and 2 British nationals lost their lives, with over 150 more wounded

Captain James H. Henderson-Coffey, U.S. Navy (Retired), exemplifies the very best traditions of naval service, leadership, and professional excellence. Born in Kentucky and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1979 and embarked on a remarkable career spanning more than four decades. His journey from enlisted Sailor to Navy Captain is a testament to determination, professionalism, and a lifelong commitment to service. He was advanced to Chief Petty Officer in 1992 and earned his commission through the Navy’s Limited Duty Officer (LDO) program in 1996.
