Just a Clerk in the Navy (part 3 of 3)

The internet has also proved helpful in piecing together Dad’s various transit trips across the Pacific. His first troopship experience occurred on the maiden voyage of the GENERAL HARRY TAYLOR (AP-15) for transportation to Milne Bay, New Guinea, loaded with replacement troops. Departing from Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay the trip took 22 days with the ship running a zigzag course throughout the Pacific.

Honoring Captain James L. “Thor” Hammersla III, USN

Yellow Footprint Day.  I reported to boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego 34 years ago today.  I started as a Private (E1) and today am a Navy Captain (O6).  I am humbled every day that I have had the opportunities I have and the leaders, mentors, and friends I have known along the way.

Just a Clerk in the Navy (part 1 of 3)

October 15, 1920 – December 8, 2002

My father, ElmerJ Schlueter USNR (CT1c) (1920-2002), served with the Naval Security Group (Office of Naval Communications) from 1942 to 1952. He was an IBM tabulating machine operator in the GS “IBM machine” section.
