CDR Ralph Nevins Shaver

Chief Radioman Ralph Nevins Shaver received four Silver Stars for his submarine service during World War Two. Citations follows:

Citation #1

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Radioman Ralph N. Shaver, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy-controlled waters during World War II. As a crewman on a submarine during three extensive war patrols, Chief Radioman Shaver efficiently performed his duties and assisted in destroying a large amount of enemy shipping.

SYNOPSIS: Chief Radioman Ralph N. Shaver, United States Navy, was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy-controlled waters during World War II. Under the most difficult conditions he skillfully furnished his commanding officer with vital information, enabling him to sink over 39,000 tons of enemy shipping and damage over 4,000 tons.

SYNOPSIS: Chief Radioman Ralph N. Shaver, United States Navy, was awarded a Second Gold Star in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy-controlled waters during World War II. Chief Shaver’s ability in transmitting information to his Commanding Officer contributed directly to the sinking of an important amount of enemy shipping and the damaging of an enemy warship.

SYNOPSIS: Chief Radioman Ralph N. Shaver, United States Navy, was awarded a Third Gold Star in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Silver Star for gallantry in action while serving aboard a United States Submarine during war patrols in enemy-controlled waters during World War II. Chief Shaver’s contributed materially to the sinking of more than 30,000 tons of enemy shipping. His calm manner and devotion to duty were of valuable assistance and his conduct was an inspiration to all with whom he served.
