Retired Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Tommy L. Dunn, son of Willie James Dunn and Geraldine Paradise of Sandersville, Georgia. CSM Dunn enlisted into the United States Army, infantry division in 1971 completing basic combat training and advanced individual training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina.
CSM Dunn has served in numerous non-commissioned officer leadership positions including team leader, squad leader, platoon sergeant and Senior Drill Sergeant, Brigade operations Sergeant Major, and Battalion Command Sergeant Major. He also served as a senior ROTC instructor at Penn State University.
CSM Dunn overseas assignments include tours of Kosovo, Alaska, Korea and two tours in Germany. His stateside assignment includes two tours at Ft. Hood, Texas, and one at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Fort McClellan, Alabama, Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Fort Stewart, Georgia.
CSM Dunn military education spans all four levels of Non-Commissioned Officer Education System. He has attended the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy (class #37), the Advanced Non-Commissioned Course and the Primary and Basic Leader Course. His military schooling also includes the Drill Sergeant Course, Airborne School, and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle Commanders Course.
CSM Dunn’s award and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (5th award), Army Commendation Medal (2nd award), Army Achievement Medal (2nd award), Good Conduct Medal (8th award), and numerous service medals. He has earned the Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, the Airborne Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Republic of Korean Ranger Badge, Kosovo Liberation Ribbon, the Order of Saint Maurice medal and NATO Medal.
CSM Dunn retired from active-duty February 2001 as Brigade Command Sergeant Major of the First Raider Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division Fort Steward Georgia after 31 years active duty.

I can attest to the professionalism of CSM Dunn. He was my very first platoon sergeant in a line unit. He was my biggest influencer in my military career. He cared and believed in me more then anyone else did in the military. I did 20 years myself in the military and owe that to CSM Dunn. Another friend of mine who was inspired by CSM Dunn. Did 35 years and spent most of his time in special ops. Every military school he went to. He was the distinguished honor graduate. We owe all that to CSM Dunn. I feel truly blessed and honored to have served with CSM Dunn.

My name is Eric Ausborn. I served with CSM Dunn when he was a Squad Leader. I was fresh out of basic training. New to Ft Hood Tx. Immediately I recognized the leadership and talent that he possessed. His professionalism was off the charts. I knew then I wanted to learn and pattern myself after his leadership and standards. I owe my years of service to him. He taught me what it means to carry yourself as a soldier. I patterned my service commitment, because of what he taught me. To this very moment, I’m blessed to call him a friend.
