MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) — Those in the Navy Cryptology officer community were designated ‘Information Warfare Officers’ in May [2005] to reflect their roles in managing, moving and protecting information.
The name change affects officers with 161X, 164x, 644x and 744x designators. Currently, there are more than 860 officers with this designator. This move marks a new era, acknowledging the expanded skill sets and responsibilities the Navy has vested in these officers.
On April 22, the U.S. Navy announced that it had recommissioned one of its former Ticonderoga-class missile cruisers following a modernization process, namely, the USS Cape St. George (CG 71). According to the announcement, the vessel has already arrived at its new homeport at Naval Base San Diego, California, after being permanently relocated from Naval Station Everett in Washington state.

As reported by Chosun on March 18, 2025, South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) hosted a handover ceremony at its Ulsan headquarters for Jeongjo the Great, the lead vessel of Korea’s next-generation Aegis destroyers. During the event, HD HHI stated that it can build up to five Aegis destroyers per year for the U.S. Navy if bilateral cooperation is formalized, and that it is prepared to expand this capacity further depending on demand. The company emphasized that these Aegis destroyers are equivalent in size and performance to the U.S. Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class. This announcement comes as the United States faces structural limitations in its domestic shipbuilding sector, where the number of shipyards has declined from over 400 to fewer than 30.

In the summer of 1967, Midshipman First Class Joseph Glutting was put in charge of a 3-inch gun crew onboard the USS Worden (CG-18) during a search-and-rescue operation south of Hanoi. North Vietnamese shore batteries spotted their helicopter and fired off a volley so close that the explosions drenched Glutting and his men with seawater. As a destroyer came to their rescue, Glutting remarked, “That’s the kind of ship I want to be on—going forward and attacking, not heading out of harm’s way.” Fellow midshipmen that same year flew S-2 Trackers on antisubmarine warfare missions and were even sent ashore with Marine Corps Combined Action Platoons. A year later, Midshipman Richard Gano made course adjustments during an underway replenishment onboard the ammunition ship Mauna Kea. “I returned to the Academy with a letter designating me as an OOD, a Vietnam Service Ribbon and later a Meritorious Unit Commendation ribbon,” Gano said. “I was proud of my contributions to the war effort. The cruise ended up being a dream come true.”
