On August 21, 2017, USS John S. McCain (DDG 56), was involved in a collision with the Liberian-flagged tanker Alnic MC off the coast of Singapore and Malaysia, east of the Strait of Malacca. According to a U.S. Navy press release, the breach “resulted in flooding to nearby compartments, including crew berthing, machinery, and communications rooms.”

As officials scrambled to fix a software glitch, another drone vessel smashed into the idling boat’s starboard side, vaulted over the deck, and crashed back into the water – an incident captured in videos obtained by Reuters.

Red came from Illinois and joined the Navy as a teenager. He was serious; a World War II veteran and a Navy career man. I was 21 years old living in Brooklyn, New York, when I joined the Navy during the Korean War and served the last 11 months of a 4 year enlistment in the Azores with “Red.”
