On December 1, 1968, Naval Security Group Detachment Sugar Grove was established. It became a Naval Security Group Activity (NSGA) when the Naval Radio Station was closed in November, 1995.

Christian Andreas Doppler was an Austrian physicist and mathematician whose 1842 description of what we now call the Doppler Effect fundamentally changed the understanding of wave phenomena. In 1921, U.S. Army Brigadier General William “Billy” Mitchell demonstrated what many considered unthinkable at the time: aircraft could sink battleships. Under his direction, Army-Air Service bombers successfully destroyed decommissioned warships — including the former German battleship Ostfriesland and the U.S. Alabama — during highly publicized bombing trials, proving that aerial bombs posed a genuine threat even to heavily armored capital ships.
