In the past year, two distinct U.S. navies have emerged. One, operating in the Mediterranean and Red Seas, is engaged in full-time warfare, expending hundreds of missiles and conducting thousands of combat flight hours to protect the fleet, allies, and commercial shipping from Iranian-backed Houthi missile and drone attacks. The second operates across the vast Indo-Pacific region and is rapidly modernizing, rearming, training, and planning for a potential fight with China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

The destroyer USS Fitzgerald embarked an AI-enabled monitoring system that helps the crew spot maintenance needs before they metastasize into bigger problems.

At around 0300, on Sunday, 22 December, the Aegis cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG 64) shot down an F/A-18F preparing to land on USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75) while operating in the Red Sea.  The Carrier Strike Group to which each of these units was assigned was an element of the U.S.-led Operation Prosperity Guardian, assigned to protect Red Sea merchant traffic from Yemen-based Houthi attacks.
