OTD 60 Years Ago, The National Cryptologic School was Approved

April 30, 1965, Secretary of Defense McNamara approved designation of the National Cryptologic School.

Internally, NSA is a true global training enterprise with more than 20 campuses, four cryptologic centers and six cryptologic training schools. Our prestigious National Cryptologic School (NCS) offers advanced classes in language, cryptology, leadership, education and business expertise.

Navy Cryptology Can Be Great at the Basics—Again

Now that the Navy has a separate cyber warfare community, cryptologic warfare can refocus on its traditional missions.

Until recently, Navy cryptologic warfare officers (CWOs) were responsible for three disciplines: electromagnetic warfare (EW), signals intelligence (SigInt), and cyberspace operations. To be promoted, officers sought experience in all three disciplines.1 However, the fiscal year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act directed the Navy to create a cyber force apart from the CW community, similar to the Army and Air Force cyber branches.2 In response, the Navy created the maritime cyber warfare officer and cyber warfare technician specialties to focus on offensive and defensive cyber operations.

UPDATED: USS Nimitz in the Philippine Sea; U.S. Destroyer Makes Taiwan Strait Transit

This post has been updated with additional information on the movements of Chinese carrier CNS Shandong.

The Nimitz Carrier Strike Group is now operating in the Philippine Sea following a port visit to Guam, while elsewhere, a U.S. Navy destroyer carried out a Taiwan Strait passage on Wednesday while a U.S. littoral combat ship carried out a joint sail in the South China Sea with an Australian destroyer on Friday.

Celebrating WWII Cryptologists — Bainbridge Island, WA

CTOCM Penny M. Tardona, CNSG 8th Force Master, will join CTICM (Ret.) Matt Zullo, author of On the Roof Gang, at Fort Ward Park on Bainbridge Island, Washington, on 23 May at 9:30 AM. Together, they  will dedicate a plaque honoring the incredible work of our early Cryptologists during World War II.

Philippine Forces Land on Contested South China Sea Feature

Philippine Marines, National Police officers and Coast Guard members landed on three contested South China Sea features today to assert Manila’s maritime jurisdiction following a similar China Coast Guard action earlier this month.
