She attended Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a minor in Naval Science. On December 23, 1993, she was commissioned as a Naval Ensign through the Atlanta Region Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) and began her career as a cryptologist.
