Senior Chief Petty Officer Maynes was born in Bellport, NY and enlisted in the U. S. Navy on 19 DEC 1999. He attended Basic Training at recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, IL and CTT “A” School at Corry Station, in Pensacola FL where he earned the Cryptologic Technician Technical rating. In 2000 he reported to Naval Security Group Activity Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for duty. There he completed Electronic Support Measures (ESM) Basic Operator through ESM Supervisor qualifications supporting 8 submarine deployments. He was awarded the NEC of 9135.
He sadly passed away at the end of July last year after battling cancer.

Charles Jackson French was a Navy Mess Specialist 1st Class Petty Officer the night the USS Gregory (APD 3) was sunk by Japanese destroyers during the Battle of Guadalcanal. French saved the lives of more than a dozen Sailors by swimming through the night, dragging a raft full of injured shipmates through shark-infested waters.
