While assigned to Detachment A NAVFAC Danang with Company L Marine Support Battalion, both men died when the CH46 they were flying in crashed in Quang Nam Province Vietnam. CTC Gates is the only Navy Cryptologist whose name is on the Vietnam Memorial Wall; MGySgt Storm was one of 10 men assigned to the 1st Radio Battalion KIA in Vietnam.

According to Coffelt Database, which were drawn from other sources (Texas Tech Virtual Archives), this was a tragic accident. The helicopter Master Gy Sgt Storm & CTC Gates were passengers in encountered poor weather & no radio comm w/ Danang. Danang tried repeatedly to contact the chopper by radio, but that did not work. Apparently, Danang had the chopper on radar, but not radio. The chopper crashed into a hill outside of Danang. Further, Top Storm was a veteran of the Korean War also. Top was the phrase all Marines used when talking about an E-9 Sgt. in the Corps. It was a short hand expression for the Top Sgt. & a term of respect.

CTRC Bob Gates was our DF Supervisor at Kamiseya before sent to Vietnam. He was a outstanding supervisor and friend. The DF shack
was devastated by his death. He is remembered fondly.
