Gold Star Mother’s and Family Day falls on September 25 this year and is traditionally observed on the last Sunday in September. The day is for honoring families of those who have received The Gold Star – the military award no one wants.

My recruiter had told me that I would be trained as a nuclear technician and assigned to submarine duty, but he lied. After I was sworn in I was told that since I required glasses I could never be assigned to submarine duty, and I was reassigned. I arrived at Kami Seya in early 1964 as an E-3, after going through ET “A” school at Treasure Island.
