June 25, 1942, the Japanese destroyer Yamakaze was torpedoed and sunk by USS Nautilus (SS-168) about 60 nautical miles from the coast of Japan. Yamakaze had sunk USS Shark (SS-174) a few months earlier. This photo was taken through the periscope of the Nautilus.

Communications intelligence played a huge role in the United States submarine action of the Pacific War. The role ComInt played in the Pacific Fleet’s submarine campaign remains to this day not fully appreciated.
