May these men forever RIP in the hands of GOD. Thank you, Mario, for remembering them.
I do have one question: What do the letters ‘SG’ and ‘SU’ behind some names mean rather than ‘SS’?

SU) – “In training for submarine qualifications”
(SQ) – “Qualified in submarines, but not planned for future assignment to submarine duty.”
(SG) – “Qualified in submarines, but not in submarine source rating; not detailed by the submarine community.”

I was a CT stationed in Azores at the time. We listened and listened for any signal whatsoever from the Scorpion. Unfortunately nothing but silence. A very long time ago. Continued peace shipmates.

I think of the Scorpion often, the decision of one man changed the fate of his family and mine forever. My father was transfer to the Scorpion just a few weeks before it left on its last mission. The SK on the sub, enlistment was up, my father was actually in route to join the crew when the order came for him not to join them, the other man reenlisted with the clause that he would return to the Scorpion and he’s crew and My father was sent back to his family. He passed last year and we found all the orders for it, and the order releasing him from it. RIP to the crew of 589.
