SGT Paul Jay Kingery, USMC
April 24, 1946 – May 13, 1968

Born in Chardon, Ohio, SGT Jay Kingery was assigned to Sub-Unit #1, 1st Radio Battalion, III Marine Amphibious Force.  His MOS/Specialty was 2571 (Special Radio Operator).

Remembering USS Iowa (BB 61)

1.  25 years ago today (19 April 1989) I was underway in USS Iowa for fleet exercises in the Caribbean.  It was a beautiful morning.  Standing above and aft the bridge I readied myself for the firing of Turret Two’s 16 inch guns. A moment later, the beauty of the day was lost as the turret suffered a horrific explosion and fire that killed 47 of our shipmates.  The takeaways of that day once again illustrate the absolute wonder of our Navy, specifically our Sailors, and the criticality of the job you do.

When Intelligence Made a Difference – The Doolittle Raid (Guest Post)

The Raid

Four months after the devastating air attack on Pearl Harbor the US struck back at Imperial Japan. On April, 18, 1942 sixteen B-25 Army Air Corps B-25 medium bombers, in the “first air operation to strike the Japanese archipelago,” bombed targets in five cities – Tokyo, Yokohama, Yokosuka, Nagoya, and Kobe.(1)  The raid caught the Japanese by surprise and killed about 50 people and injured some 400.(2)
