On March 10, 1876, the first transmission of voice over electric wires was from Alexander Graham Bell to his laboratory assistant Thomas Watson. This historic event was marked by Bell’s famous phrase, “Mr. Watson, come here! I want to see you.” This first telephone transmission took place at the Bell & Watson laboratory located at 5 Exeter Place in Boston.

My mother’s father, William E. Burnet was a long-term employee of the Bell System. So, too, my uncle, William E. Burnet (10th or 11th, I think). My mother, Jean Burnet McKane, worked for American Telephone & Telegraph during World War II. A lady customer I was dating in 1983 was also working for AT&T (and not looking forward to the pending break-up of AT&T in January 1984). It was immediately after dating her that I decided to “get the hell out of the Land Rover business and write a book.”
