Tomorrow Commander David Gutierrez will be relieved by Commander Eric Weiss as the Commanding Officer, Cyber Strike Activity SIXTY THREE.   Commander Gutierrez’s biography follows:

Commander Gutierrez was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  He graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree.  Upon graduation in May 2002, he was commissioned and reported to Pensacola, Florida for training.  Additionally, he holds a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.

Commander Gutierrez reported to his first command, Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Hawaii, in 2006.  He was a Subsurface Direct Support Officer for the first year of his tour, followed by a yearlong deployment to Iraq as an Electronic Warfare Officer supporting multiple Explosive Ordinance Disposal teams throughout the country.  His final year was spent on the watch.

From Hawaii, Commander Gutierrez reported to NIOC Colorado, where he qualified as a Collection Manager on the watch and served as a Department Head.  While at NIOC Colorado, he also served as the Operations Officer and ultimately the command’s Executive Officer.

After Colorado, CDR Gutierrez reported to U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th in Naples, Italy as the Collection Manager.  Upon completing this tour, he attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and eventually reported to U.S. Cyber Command as the Lead Exercise Planner for three annual Tier 1 exercises and USCYBERCOM’s premier annual exercise, CYBER FLAG.  Commander Gutierrez is currently assigned as the Commanding Officer of Cyber Strike Activity SIXTY THREE.

Awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation, and multiple unit awards.

Commander Gutierrez is married to the former Erica Halverson of Stoughton, Wisconsin, and they have three children together.
