Remembering Captain Donald C. Godwin, USN, 4th Commander to Lead Navy Cryptology

On January 21, 1943, Captain Godwin was killed while on active duty in plane crash that was returning from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, to San Francisco, California.

The Rewards of COMINT

During the Civil War, both Union and Confederate forces engaged in the intercept of telegraph messages from the other side, often profiting by the intelligence derived from reading plain text or decrypting messages sent in code or cipher. In late 1864, as General Ulysses Grant was at the gates of Richmond, the Confederates received special benefits from what one source calls the “most successful wiretapping of the war.”

Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture, Honshu, Japan Decommissioned

The NSG maintained a SIGINT facility at Sakata, in Yamagata Prefecture, approximately 300 miles north of Tokyo, facing the Sea of Japan, between 1956 and 1962.  It was established in November 1956 as a detachment of the NSG Activity at Kami Seya, but was designated an NSG Activity in its own right on June 26, 1957.
