Remembering the Crew of USS John S. McCain (DDG 56)

On August 21, 2017, USS John S. McCain (DDG 56), was involved in a collision with the Liberian-flagged tanker Alnic MC off the coast of Singapore and Malaysia, east of the Strait of Malacca. According to a U.S. Navy press release, the breach “resulted in flooding to nearby compartments, including crew berthing, machinery, and communications rooms.”

World Photography Day

In celebration of World Photography Day, check out this photo of Mys Shmidta, the location of a bomber base in the former Soviet Union. This image, taken on Aug. 18, 1960, was the first image acquired by the first successful Corona satellite – mission 9009 – using the KH-1 camera.

The Naval Security Group in Vietnam – USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA 42) (Guest Post)

The USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42) was the second of three Midway class carriers, and the first carrier to be named for a U.S. President.  Construction was started in December 1943.   Originally the ship was christened as the USS Coral Sea when launched 29 April 1945, but on 8 May President Harry Truman approved the recommendation of the Secretary of the Navy to change the name to honor the recently deceased President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  The FDR was commissioned 27 October 1945 at the New York Naval Shipyard.

RDML Will Pennington Assigned as Deputy Commander, TENTH Fleet

The secretary of the Navy and chief of naval operations announced today that Rear Adm. (lower half) William P. Pennington will be assigned as deputy commander, Tenth Fleet, Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.  RDML Pennington is currently serving as commander, Task Force Seven Zero; and commander, Carrier Strike Group Five, Yokosuka, Japan.  His biography follows:
