Tomorrow Commander Steven C. Layfield will be relieved by Commander CDR Dave Clark as the Commanding Officer, Naval Information Warfare Training Group Norfolk . Commander Layfield’s biography follows:
CDR Layfield is a native of Americus, Georgia and a prior Marine. He entered the Navy via the Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program in 2000 and was commissioned through Officer’s Candidate School, Pensacola, FL in 2003. His education includes a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Technology at Southern Polytechnic State University and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School.
At sea, CDR Layfield served as the Direct Support Cryptologic Officer aboard USS Barry (DDG 52) conducting cryptologic operations in the COMSIXTHFLT area of responsibility (AOR) and as the Signals Warfare Officer aboard USS Mustin (DDG 89) where he completed a Western Pacific deployment. He served his O4 afloat milestone tour as the Cryptologic Resource Coordinator and the Deputy Information Warfare Commander at Commander Amphibious Squadron ELEVEN embarked aboard USS Essex (LHD 2) and USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6); where he completed five deployments within the 7th Fleet AOR. He competed his O5 Milestone as the FIRES Director for COMUSNAVCENT/COMFIFTHFLT where he led TLAM, SAP, STO and Information Operations teams in the planning and execution of kinetic and non-kinetic strikes throughout an extremely active and volatile AOR.
Ashore, CDR Layfield served at Naval Security Group Activity, Pensacola, Florida as the senior operations watch officer; Navy Information Operations Command, Suitland in Maryland as the subsurface Cryptologic Carry-On program Contracting Officer Representative; Information Warfare Training Command Florida as the N71 and lead Cryptologic Resource Coordinator Course Instructor; Information Warfare Training Command Pensacola’s Executive Officer, where he led the largest command in the
Information Warfare Training Domain; and as a fellow on the SECNAV Tours with Industry at Apple Inc. where he served as an Engineering Program Manager in Wireless Design developing the 10th anniversary iPhone.
In December 2019, he assumed command of Naval Information Warfare Training Group Norfolk.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (3), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2).
