Moon River and Black Ponies – My Year in Vietnam – Part 7 of 7

Naval Support Activity Detachment Dong Tam County:

The next day I received my new orders to Naval Support Activity Detachment Dong Tam on the My Tho River about 50 miles southwest of Saigon.  I would spend a month in Dong Tam monitoring the mobile riverine forces, including Seal Team assets, that staged from the boat basin just off the river.

USS Hunterdon County:

I received orders to relieve a member of COMSEC Team 706A that was embarked on the USS Hunterdon County (LST-838), then located in the Gulf of Thailand near Ha Tien, the border town between South Vietnam and Cambodia.

Mekong Delta/Cam Ranh Bay

The remnants of Team 3 were transported several miles down the river from Saigon to Naval Support Activity Nha Be where we would be doing COMSEC monitoring in the large operations center there.  The base was located at the junction of the Long Tau and Soi Rap Rivers that ran through the Rung Sat Special Zone to the South China Sea.

Moon River and Black Ponies – My Year in Vietnam – Part 4 of 7

COMSEC Team 3, Vung Tau:

In late February, my friend Mac was transferred south to Vung Tau, which was located on the coast of the South China Sea about 40 miles southeast of Saigon.  We had a small team there and I was hopeful that I would also get orders there.
