The following is an open letter from Captain McGonagle, Commanding Officer of USS Liberty, to President Clinton, dated October 24, 1998. He died on March 3, 1999.
Thank you for posting Captain McGonagle’s letter of 24 October 1998 to President Clinton, Mario! From what I understand of the attack on USS Liberty, the attacking forces knew prior to firing the first shot that the ship was a U.S. naval vessel with an American crew. I can think of no basis of morality behind Israel’s attack on USS Liberty. From what I understand, if memory serves correctly, the Government of Israel did not want the personnel aboard Liberty monitoring the communications of the Israeli armed forces in active operations at that time against Egyptian forces in the Sinai. From what I understand this appears to have been the motive behind the attack on Liberty.
My heart and full appreciation are always dedicated to the men and women of the Armed Forces of the United States and to their families. I value the lives of our military personnel and their families above the lives of any other people on this planet. Thank you to all those who serve, have served, and will serve in the Armed Forces of the United States of America and their families.
