It’s my belief that, world wide, millions of lives were saved as a result of the joint U.S. Army & Navy effort against the cryptographic systems of the Axis forces in World War II.
I have a copy of a letter that then Admiral (later Fleet Admiral) King wrote to the then Secretary of the Navy, James V. Forrestal in the fall of 1944 which explained why secrecy had to be maintained related to the Navy’s ComInt effort in World War II. I’ll pass it on to Mario later this week. (It was published in the Pearl Harbor Attack Hearings. I know of no Pearl Harbor historian who has ever mentioned the letter in question.)
