Tomorrow Commander Chad Smith will be relieved by Commander Zachary McKeehan as Commanding Officer, Information Warfare Training command, Corry Station.
Command Smith’s significant accomplishments while in command include:
Commanded one of the largest O5 training commands in the Navy, leading a staff of over 300 military and civilian personnel with an average of 2,000 joint service students daily.
Successfully executed of 31 Courses of Instruction (COI) on Corry Station and 2 COI’s at Information Warfare Training Site (IWTS) Keesler, with over 540 annual convenes providing training, Sailorization, development, and delivery of over 15,000 CTT/CTR/CTM/CTN/IT Joint-Service warriors, Sailors, and Cryptologic Warfare Officers.
Students under his command now fight, defend, manage the Radio Frequency spectrum, conduct operations in the Cyber Warfare arena, and repair networks and equipment, all while conducting Electromagnetic Maneuver Warfare across the full range of Information Warfare Operations in support of Fleet, National, and Department of Defense requirements.
Training systems and curriculum were updated in Signal Analysis, EW, Information Technician, and Cryptologic Warfare Officer courses of instruction, significantly improving the training delivered to Sailors and joint-service students. IWTC Corry Station entered a new era of training with the standup of three Cyber Warfare Training Courses, adding a completely new training mission responsibility for the Navy and the command.

Commander Smith, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, was commissioned via Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1999. He graduated from Miami (Ohio) University in May 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education and attended the Naval Postgraduate School, graduating in 2008 with a Master of Science in Information Warfare Systems Engineering.
Commander Smith’s operational fleet tours included assignments as Direct Support Officer aboard a variety of combatants in the Western Pacific (2002-2004) in Kunia, HI: Electronic Warfare/Ship’s Signal Exploitation Space Officer (2004-2006) in USS SAIPAN (LHA 2) in Norfolk, VA in support of OPERATION NEW HORIZONS; and Flag Cryptologist for Carrier Strike Group TEN (2010-2012) embarked in USS HARRY S TRUMAN (CVN 75) in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM.
He also served as a Watch Officer at Naval Security Group Activity Kuna (2001-2002) in Kunia, HI; Cryptologic Warfare Officer/Cryptologic Technician Community Sponsor at Naval Network Warfare Command (2008-2010) in Little Creek, VA: Executive Officer of Navy Information Operations Command San Diego (2012-2014) in San Diego, CA; and Cryptologic Warfare Junior Officer Detailer at Navy Personnel Command (2014-2016).
Commander Smith is the Operations Officer, Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command. He is responsible for the execution of the Navy Cyber Security Service Provider and global Defensive Cyber Operations mission set.
Commander Smith’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy Achievement Medal and various campaign, unit and service awards.
After 20 years serving the United States of American and the United States Navy, Commander Smith will be retiring. Thank you for your service, your mentorship and your leadership.
