Tomorrow Commander Michael Herlands will be relieved by Commander Chuck Hall as the Commanding Officer, Navy Information Operations Command Colorado.   Commander Herlands’ biography follows:

Commander Michael J. Herlands was born and raised in Northern Virginia and is a 2000 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School Monterey, California, in 2007 with a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, specializing in communications.

CDR Herlands previous tours include the National Security Agency, Commander Naval Security Group, USS KEARSARGE, Navy Information Operations Command Norfolk VA, Expeditionary Strike Group 5, Navy Information Operations Command Sugar Grove WV, and Fleet Cyber Command/TENTH Fleet. He served as Flag Aide and Deputy Executive Assistant to VADM Tighe at Fleet Cyber Command and was the Executive Officer at Navy Information Operations Command Sugar Grove WV.

CDR Herlands wears the Information Warfare Officer and Surface Warfare Officer pins, as well as the Deep Submergence Insignia and has served on teams that have been awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, the Meritorious Unit Citation, and the Navy “E” Ribbon. He was the recipient of the 2018 Association of Old Crows Military Service Award-Navy, and has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and numerous other personal and unit awards.

CDR Herlands reported as the Commanding Officer of Navy Information Operations Command Colorado in December 2017.

Commander Herlands’ next tour of duty is serving in The Navy Cyber Warfare Development Group.
