Tomorrow, Commander Sherri Zimmerman will be relieved as the Commanding Officer of Navy Information Operations Command San Diego. Following the Change of Command she will retire. Commander Zimmerman served our Nation and our Navy for 24 years with honor and distinction. Congratulations on a very successful career! Commander Zimmerman’s biography follows:
Commander Sherri R. Zimmerman, a native of Kentucky, enlisted in the Navy in 1993, attended boot camp in Orlando, FL, Hospital Corpsman “A” School in San Diego, CA, and then Mid-Year Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, RI. She graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in English, commissioned as a Cryptologic Officer.
Commander Zimmerman attended the Navy Cryptologic Division Officer training in Pensacola, FL. Subsequently, she reported to Naval Security Group Activity Menwith Hill, Harrogate UK, as Division Officer and an Operations Watch Officer. In 2002, she graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA, with a Master of Science in Space Systems Operations, and also completed Joint Professional Military Education Phase I through the Naval War College. Her payback tour was at SPAWAR Space Field Activity, Chantilly, VA as Chief of the SIGINT Director’s Action Group, then on the staff of the Director of the National Reconnaissance Office.
For her Department Head tour, she was assigned to the Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command, Norfolk, Virginia, where she led the Training and Exercise Department, and as Deputy of Operations. During this tour she was assigned as an Individual Augmentee to Multi-National Corps Iraq as an Information Operations Planner for twelve months in Baghdad, Iraq supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In May of 2009, Commander Zimmerman became the Officer in Charge of the Navy Information Operations Detachment Chesapeake until the unit’s disestablishment in December 2011. She has also earned Masters of Science in Management and Masters of Business Administration degrees from the University of Maryland. She completed her O5 milestone tour at U.S. Fleet Forces Command as N24 Fleet Intelligence, Information Operations, and Electronic Warfare Readiness.
2013-2014 she was assigned to Navy Cyber Forces, in Suffolk, Virginia as the Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Readiness and Modernization (N4) and then as the Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Readiness (N3).
Commander Zimmerman served as Executive Officer, Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Texas from May 2014 through June 2015, before reporting to NIOC San Diego to assume Command in July 2015.
Authorized to the wear the Information Dominance Warfare Officer (IDWO) pin, she has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various service medals and ribbons.
