As I approach the halfway point of my current assignment, I am reminded how little time there is…It is a fact of life in Naval service — all of our assignments are temporary in nature.  Leading Petty Officer, Cryptologic Resource Coordinator, Commanding Officer, Fleet Commander — all are temporary assignments.  Whether they are measured in days, months, or years, the authority you enjoy in your current position is limited by time.

Compound the limited time you have with those periods immediately following assignment and just prior to transfer.  Those periods of establishing your situational awareness, observing how things work, and determining what actions you will take.  What about that period just prior to transfer, when you may be hesitant to take action or make change, preferring to defer decisions to your relief?  Suddenly, that two year tour just became 18 months.

Now consider holiday periods, leave, etc.  You get the point…time is limited.  Making the most of the time you have is critical.

So what are you waiting for?  It is time to take action.  Make those necessary changes.  Establish those new programs.  Follow-through on your ideas.

Your Sailors are waiting…

“How did it get so late so soon?
It’s night before it’s noon.
December is here before its June.
My goodness how the time has flewn.
How did it get so late so soon?”
