CTC Robert S. Gates
January 28, 1933 – December 29, 1969

Born on 28 January, 1933, CTC Robert S. Gates was born in Hamilton, Massachusetts.  On December 29, 1969, CTC Gates was killed when the CH46 he was flying in crashed in Quang Nam Province Vietnam.  He was assigned to Detachment Naval Communications Facility in Thuan An, Vietnam.

Chief Gates was TAD from Kamiseya, Japan where he worked a direction finding (DF) mission.
To the best of our knowledge, Chief Petty Officer Gates is the only U.S. Navy cryptologist whose name is etched on the Vietnam memorial wall.  His name can be found on Panel 15W, Row 15W, 103.

MGySgt Edward R. Storm also died in the crash.
