Design + Maritime Security
Monday, October 26, 2015 at 9:00 AM – Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at 5:00 PM (PDT)
For those of you who might be in the area and would like to participate in a Design Thinking workshop with Anne Gibbon, Zvika Kreiger, and Dr. Richard Lum on Martime Security in the Pacific, details below:Event Details
What is Maritime Security in an age where major forces of instability don’t fall under the jurisdiction of a nation state — and often outside their capacity to act? What is insecurity when we eat the fish caught by slaves and islands of garbage twice the size of Texas are floating across the Pacific?
These challenges — and the many others that intersect in this domain — inherently cross borders, constituencies, and sectors. This is an area that demands deeper collaboration between the private and public sector, and requires the best ideas and most innovative thinking from both. What are the opportunities within the constraints of the current regulations and structures? What business models make maritime security a sustainable reality? And how can new technologies offer new ways to address the drivers of instability and insecurity on our oceans?
This workshop will be led by Dr. Richard Lum, a futurist and head of Vision Foresight Strategy, Zvika Krieger, Director of Political-Military Strategy at the U.S. Department of State, and Anne Gibbon, design thinker and former Naval Officer. We’ll be using various design methodologies to explore the messy system of the Pacific Ocean — its climate, natural resources, conflict, and crime. The workshop will be interactive, multidisciplinary, encourage out-of-the-box thinking, and draw participants from diverse perspectives in government, military, NGOs, tech industry, and beyond. We’re experimenting: Can the collaborative power of passionate people make a difference to security at sea?
